District judge had failed to dismiss case, even though ordered to do so.
On Wednesday, President Trump announced a full pardon for Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, bringing to an end a legal saga that began during the 2016 election and the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation.
President Trump wrote on Twitter, “It is my Great Honor to announce that General Michael T. Flynn has been granted a Full Pardon. Congratulations to General Flynn and his wonderful family. I know you will now have a truly fantastic Thanksgiving.”
In 2017, General Flynn, who was President Trump’s national security adviser, pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about conversations he had with a Russian ambassador. This past January, he told the court that he was “innocent of the crime” and he filed to withdraw his guilty plea. The Department of Justice sought to have his case dismissed, saying that “continued prosecution of this case would not serve the interests of justice.”
Back in June, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ordered U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan to dismiss the case against General Flynn. Instead, Judge Sullivan appointed another federal judge to examine the government’s justification for dismissing the case and to analyze whether Flynn should be found in contempt of court for his earlier guilty plea.
